More About Protection Training
Protection sessions usually last around 30 minutes, but it depends on the dog and his level of training. Your first evaluation is free. In the first evaluation the trainer will work with the dog to evaluate him/her, and will discuss your dog with you. Then the trainer will make a plan for your dogs training and answer any questions you may have. Protection training is usually done once a week, and no more than twice a week.
Your dog should have solid basic obedience before beginning protection training. It is prefered that the dog goes through one of our courses, but we make exeptions for dogs who are already obedience trained and when the owners can demonstrate control.

Q: What is Schutzhund?
A: Schutzhund (German for "protection dog") is a competitive dog sport. It has trials with a 3-part competition- Obedience, Tracking, and Protection.
It tests dogs of several breeds for working traits, and was originally designed to test the working ability of the German Shepherd Dog. The obedience is similar to AKC obedience in a soccer sized field, with such things as off-lead heeling, about turns, down out of motion with recall, long down-stays with distractions, retrieving a dumbell on the flat and also over a wall, send aways, and distractions including gun fire. In tracking the dog locates articles in terrain and signals to the handler. In protection, dogs search for the helper who is hiding behind a blind, and do a bark and hold, and attack with an out. Overall, the dog should exhibit courage, intelligence, agility, and trainability. The dog loves doing it, is well trained and excersized, and it creates a bond between dog and handler. If a dog scores well and passes, he can progress to the next level. There are 3 titles, I, II, and the ultimate, Schutzhund III.
Schutzhund, although it has a component of protection training, is NOT the same as street protection, or real life protection, which requres additional and different training.
